Macbeth

  18 August, 2022

Hello friends, here I am going to write a blog on Macbeth. Which is assigned by Dilip Barad sir.

                             Macbeth

∆ Feminist reading of Lady Macbeth :

Lady Macbeth is considered one of the main characters in William Shakespeare's Macbeth. She is the wife of Macbeth who kills the king of Scottland and become the king of Scottland.

Women in literature are repeatedly boxed into roles describing them is weak and without power. In the case of Lady  Macbeth in William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the character is wrought with intelligence ambition and fortitude, which are qualities that are typically ascribed to male characters. Her motivation adds complexity to her character because she is not solely attempting to gain greatness for herself but additionally also for her husband however her motivations are not totally selfless for by becoming the queen she would be elevated to the highest possible rung of society. Unlike what she states about Macbeth she does have the embition and drive to remove whatever she needs to remove from her path to reach the echelon of society she desire.

Lady Macbeth is possible Shakespeare's most famous and vivid female character. She is generally depicted in the popular mind as the epitome of evil and images of her appear over and over again in several cultures.

∆ Controlling – she understands that her husband doesn’t have the savageness required to murder the king of his own accord, so she manipulates him. She plans out the murder, then takes control of events when Macbeth loses his mind.

∆ Cruel – she is a violent, cold-blooded character who is happy to scheme the murder. She ridicules Macbeth when he doesn’t agree to participate in her violent plans.

∆ Two-faced – she welcomes King Duncan like a friend whilst at the same time planning his murder. She also advises Macbeth to be two-faced.

Lady Macbeth, while being notably strong compared to other members of her gender, has no way to enact her schemes as she is kept isolated from other women during the course of the play. While her strength is great, she is not powerful enough alone to deal with a murder. She does not reveal the secret of their murderous deeds because she is a woman and thus inherently weak, but she reveals the secret because she is a woman and thus has been selectively isolated from finding strength in number.

Shakespeare shows that power in the hands of women is destructive as Lady Macbeth eventually succumbs to remorse and guilt, despite her please to “murdering ministers” before any of the murders, through the scene where the Doctor observes her sleepwalking. She is shown to be hallucinating blood on her hands, “Out, damn spot! Out I say!”, with this metaphorical blood a symbol of her guilt and remorse. This scene reveals the change in her from her initial reaction to seeing the literal blood on Macbeth’s hands and ordering him to “go get some water and wash this filthy witness from your hand” - initially, she was powerful enough to be pragmatic and conceal their crimes, but as more blood has been spilled over the course of the play.

Lady Macbeth is one of the most dynamic characters in all of Shakespeare because no other character is as manipulative as she is. For the first half of Macbeth, it is Lady Macbeth who puts herself in a position of power by taking the lead in the decision to murder Duncan. To get her power, Lady Macbeth not only openly rejects her femininity, but the thought of belonging to any gender at all.
