Alfred Lord Tennyson
18 September, 2022
Hello friends, Here I am writing a blog on a great poet Alfred Tennyson. In which information is given about Tennyson's life, education, family and his famous works.
∆ Alfred Tennyson :
→ About the poet :
Alfred Lord Tennyson is one of the most popular poet of the Victorian era in England. He was named poet laureate after William Wordsworth and served in the position for 42 years.
Alfred Lord Tennyson was born in August of 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire, England. His father was a deeply religious man and worked as the rector of Somersby.
→ Education :
Since Tennyson was a scholar and poet himself, he provided his Alfred with an extensive literary education himself along with the sound knowledge of Latin and Greek languages which he considered essential for the upbringing of a good child. His formal education started in 1816 from Louth Grammar School, where he hardly spent four years and continued his education at Trinity College, Cambridge after that until 1827. Free from the dominance of his father, he breathed a sigh of relief at Cambridge and was lauded to make new friends. On account of his intelligence, humor, impersonation, and gifted qualities, he won the admiration of those interested in poetry and conversation. Also, at Cambridge, he developed a lifelong friendship with Arthur Hallam, an English poet, and William Henry Brookfield, an Anglian priest. Both supported and encouraged him later in his literary endeavors. Unfortunately, after his father’s death, he left the university without completing his degree.
→ Family :
Tennyson would be one of his family's 11 surviving children. Tennyson grew up with two older brothers, four younger brothers and four younger sisters.
Tennyson's father was a church rector who earn a decent income, but the size of the family, meant expenses had to be closely watched.
However Tennyson's home was not a happy one. His father was an elder son who had been disinherited in favor of a younger brother, which engendered resentment. Even worse, his father was an alcoholic and drug user who at times physically threatened member of the family.
Tennyson's father died in 1831. His death meant straitened circumstances for the family, and Tennyson did not complete his degree. As a younger son, Tennyson was encouraged to find a profession, such as entering the church like his father. However, the young man boys determined to focus on poetry.
→ Some Important Works of Alfred Lord Tennyson :
Best Poems:
Alfred, Lord Tennyson was a leading Victorian writer, some of his best poems include “In Memoriam A.H.H.”, “The Eagle”, “Crossing the Bar”, “The Lady of Shalott”, “Lady Clara Vere de Vere” and “Break, Break, Break.”
From the above let us discuss a little about "In Memoriam A. H. H."
In Memoriam A. H. H.
by Alfred Lord Tennyson
∆ Summary of In Memoriam A. H. H :
→Popularity of “In Memoriam A. H. H.”:
Alfred Lord Tennyson, a great English poet, wrote ‘In Memoriam A. H. H.’ It is one of the famous poems about love. It was first published in 1850. There are 133 Cantos in the poem. This is the analysis of 27th The poem is written to honor his friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, who passed away at the young age of 22. It is one of the greatest poems ever written in the 1900s. The poet expresses his emotions while grieving. He complains about the cruelty of nature and temporary life while including science and faith.
→"In Memoriam A. H. H.” As a Representative of Human Nature:
The poem accounts for the speaker’s sentiment upon losing his close friend. He takes the readers to consider a prisoner who is put into prison or a bird who is in the birdcage, but it does not mind because it has not tasted the fruits of free life. The poet does not feel envy at them. To him, man and the bird share the same characteristics. A man is psychologically captivated or he is devastated from within. The beauty outside does not attract him at all.
Then he compares himself with psychopath ex-murderer who has no sense to consider the horrific nature of his own crime because his conscience never wakes up. He prefers to be alone and content with his emotions, rather than putting himself in the circle of people and getting stomped. In the final stanza, he says that he has understood the nature of his grief, for inside, it hurts him, but to him, it is better to have felt loved and lost it than to have never experienced this unique emotion.
→Major Themes in In “Memoriam A. H. H”:
Sorrow, love, and life are the major themes of this poem. Throughout the poem, the speaker tries to make us understand that when a person is satisfied with his condition, nothing in the world can put him down. To support his argument, he talks about the caged bird, a prisoner, and a psychopath murderer just to make people realize that when a person is into a difficult situation, then the light and glory outside cannot rejuvenate him. Through acceptance, the poet is trying to recover from the pain of losing his dear friend. He adds, although there are many valuable things in our life, yet none of those can replace the feeling and comfort that love provides.

Absolam And Achistophel by John Dryden

Absolam And Achistophel
Hello friends, here I am writing blog on Absolam And Achistophel.
∆ Overview of the Poem :
Absalom and Achitophel written by John Dryden is a political satire. Since Dryden was belong to Restoration period so we can easily say Dryden’s this work is mirror of that period. We have found several historical stories through this poem.
Before describing Absalom and Achitophel as a political satire, we need to know the definition of the widely used literary technique, satire :
→ What is satire ?
"Satire is a literary attack on the follies and vices of individual or society in order to correct them through laughter and ridicule."
The entire poem, which tells the story of Absalom and Achitophel's rebellion against King David of Israel, is an allegory of the events that occurred in England in the late 17th century. Dryden uses biblical characters and events to comment upon the Exclusion Crisis and its major players, ultimately supporting King Charles II in his right to the throne.
The only intention of Dryden to write this poem was to support King Charles II. The King himself asked Dryden to write a poem satirizing the Whig party and particularly its leader Shaftesbury. Dryden was also supporter of Tory. He was called Staunch Tory. He used satire very strictly for that people who were against the King Charles II and made plan to dethrone him.
In Absalom and Achitophel, Dryden did not focus much on the Duke of Monmouth who in the poem is compared to Absalom. Instead, he criticized much about Shaftesbury who is compared to Achitophel. According to Bible, Achitophel was a counselor to the court of King David, father of Absalom. When Absalom set to fight against his father, King David, Achitophel joined Absalom’s side. So, Dryden’s Absalom and Achitophel would be much more related to the Biblical incident of Absalom and Achitophel, if he gave much importance on the Duke of Monmouth while making satire. However, Dryden mostly attacked Shaftesbury. There are some political reasons behind it. At that time in England, Shaftesbury was in lead of the Whig, who placed “The Exclusion Bill” to the House of Commons. So, Dryden wanted to save King Charles II from any volatile situation due to the continuing rebellion. That is why; Dryden gave much importance while making satire. Another reason is that Dryden might have though that if he criticized Duke of Monmouth much then he would be more furious and as the Duke of Monmouth was an illegitimate child of King Charles II, Dryden tried to make a compromise between the King and Duke of Monmouth so that the movement over the religion and power could be stopped.
The allegory begins by representing England as the Biblical land of Israel, and the Englishmen as the Jews. The group of antagonists in the poem are working against King David, whose modern representation is Charles II. The First Earl of Shaftesbury takes on the role of Achitophel, the leader of this group.Absalom is the best candidate to take the throne instead.
Achitophel begins a very long speech, during which he attempts to convince Absalom to join his rebellion. He tells Absalom that the country cries for him to take the throne in secret. He not only has the royal blood that is necessary to gain support of the people, but would be a much better King than anyone who would inherit the throne by means of succession.
Absalom defends his father, saying David is a good King and has always treated him with kindness. But Absalom is also ambitious, and is fighting against the constant flattery that Achitophel is giving him. Absalom refuses to turn against his father. He says the crown should go to the person who rightfully deserves it, David's brother, who has all the royal virtues. He admits his illegitimate birth makes him unsuited for the job, and wishes he had been born higher.
∆ Absolam And Achistophel : as a Political Satire :
In Dryden’s time, satire became popular, especially among the political parties. In that time, Dryden wrote this poem. It is his best work. Now, this satire poem is considered as a classical work of Dryden in English literature.
In this period, there were several political parties in England. Among them Whig and Tory were common. As the relation between these two parties was not good so when they expressed anything through their writing they used satire form in their writing for opposite party. In this way, satire became popular form among the parties, but as a poet or writer, Dryden used satire as a literary form in his poem in a good way.
Dryden explains the many political issues throughout the poem in great detail. He makes a number of political arguments, all the while employing the use of the poetic verse.
The poem finally ends with King David's speech, during which he upholds his traditional rights, offers conciliation to all the rebels, but also demonstrates firmness in his decisions.
In conclusion, it may be said that Absalom and Achitophel has no rival in the field of political satire. The poem is certainly a political satire, but t is a blend f dignity with incisive and effective satire.

The Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope
22 August, 2022
The Rape of the Lock
∆ According to you, who is the protagonist of the poem Clarissa or Belinda? Why? Give your answer with logical reasons.
→ The Rape of the Lock was written by Alexander Pope and first published in 1712, then reworked and published again in 1714. The poem is a mock-epic that satirizes the upper-class in London at the time. The story focuses on the central character, Belinda, whose lock of hair is cut off at a social gathering.
According to me Clarissa is the protagonist of the poem 'Rape of the Lock'. A lady who lends the Baron her scissors to chop off Belinda’s lock of hair. She later finds the whole incident frustratingly trivial and delivers a speech about how physical beauty is ultimately fleeting and that instead women should concentrate on being as morally upright as they possibly can. Looks might prove attractive to the eyes, Clarissa declares, but virtue is most attractive to the soul. While her speech obviously makes good sense, it is typical of a more traditional style of poem which would be primarily concerned with didacticism, or simply telling the reader what the moral is.Clarissa’s name, meaning “clarity,” hints that the reader might do well to take her wise advice.Clarissa reminds her:
‘How vain are all these Glories, all our Pains,
Unless good Sense preserve what Beauty gains’.
To Clarissa, a man is a fool to desire a woman for beauty alone, and a woman is a fool to demonstrate nothing but beauty in order to attract him. Though her behaviour may seem cruel, even abhorrent, she is at least sensible enough to call a spade a spade. Clarissa concludes: ‘Charms strike the Sight, but Merit wins the Soul’.
∆ What is beauty? Write your views about it.
→ Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder. Beauty is everywhere. In the face of a loved one, the delicacy of a flower, a pets love, the blue of the sky, the ocean in all its moods. Beauty can be just in a gentle word or touch when one is in need of some thoughtfulness.
And another thing is that beauty is all around us, in nature and in nurture. A small child, a fragrant flower, a cheeky animal or a powerful one, a sleek porpoise in the ocean or a sea urchin delicately walking along the rocks. As far as most humans are concerned I believe that beauty comes from within - if you are happy and contented with yourself, then your smile will radiate this happiness and your words will bring comfort to others. So, this is my point of view of 'Beauty'.
∆ Find out a research paper on "The Rape of the Lock". Give the details of the paper and write down in brief what it says about the Poem by Alexander Pope.
→ This article intends to study Alexander Popes "The Rape of the Lock" from a psychological point of view with emphasis on the myth of rape and the symbolic connotations of the rape. In the fancy world of sylphs, gnomes, and nymphs, there are two forces of superego that challenge the power of ego :one representing tradition/art and the other functioning as the good sense. It is through the clash between these two forces that Popes protagonist takes her journey to the wishes of id. Despite the sociological interpretations of the poem, the writer wishes to prove that Popes poem is a masterpiece not for its mock-heroic style nor for its satiric and moral purposes. "The Rape of the Lock" is rather a deep portrayal of human nature in the stream of works that continue the tradition of passion vs. purity.→ Research paper on "The Rape of the Lock"
Pope used mock epic style to make his satire powerful. The Rape of the Lock is its best example. As we know that the theme of this poem is the cutting of a lock of a lady’s hair. It is a trivial theme, no doubt. There is nothing heroic in it. But Pope has given this trivial theme the dignity and exaltation and epic treatment. To present this trivial theme Pope has employed nearly all the important elements of epic. Here we find invocation, episodes, supernatural machinery and grand style.
∆ Write your views about the significance of hair. Is it symbolic?
→ Hair is an outward and very visible expression of you and your personality. It's also one of the first things people notice about you because to looking at your face, which everyone does first, means looking at your hair to. Others size you up at first impression by your look including hairstyle/ haircut.
Hair is important in general because just like every other part of the body, you have to take care of it if you want it to look nice. It’s not an essential organ, but it’s noticeable and therefore critical to appearance. No matter how you feel about it, or even whether or not you have any, hair (or lack thereof) will define your look. It’s also the one part of your body that you can change as many times as you want without any major physical repercussions.
Everybody has different reasons about why hair is important or not. Some people place religious or ceremonial value to it, others are more appearance-based, and some just don’t care.
Of all the elements of the human body, hair has been one of the most well-developed symbols. It has been the subject of a variety of activities to which many meanings have been assigned. A specific hairstyle, its shape, length, weave or color in different cultures have meant belonging to particular social groups or determining economic or social status.

Film Screening : Life of Pi
9 September, 2022
Hello friends, Here I am going to write a blog on Life of Pi movie review. Which is assigned by Yesha ma'am.
1) Share your movie review :
This film tells the incredible survival story of Pi, a teen stranded on a lifeboat for what seems like forever, with a tiger for company at sea in the Pacific Ocean.
Review :
Few movies will leave a lasting impression on you, Life of Pi is one of those. Not even a single moment is dull, in fact the story is woven so tightly that you never realise that the script is so simple. Not only was he able to capture the beauty of India, he was also able to get the best of the actors.
Starting out with the older Pi recounting his unbelievable life story to an author,we travel down memory lane and are briefly introduced to Pi's childhood in picturesque Pondicherry, his family-owned zoo and his faith in God and religion.
This is the most wonderfully original movie I have seen in such a long time. It is set up with an amazing touch. We are absorbed into the Indian culture by some of the most lovely people. They are understanding of Pi's dilemmas and his religious confusion. They support him, although he is an arrogant little twit at times.
The movie narrates an incredible story using the most beautiful special effects and great actors. It is more that a survival story and it is not about friendship. This story is about faith. Director Ang Lee use all the tools he have to make this movie about a solitary young man not a boring one. It is narrated by both, young Pi and the Adult Pi, it uses music all the time so there is not space for uncomfortable silents and the rhythm of the scenes is fast. The result a very entertained film.
The most important thing of this film is it character. It is obvious because we are seeing for almost 2 hours just one character. So it is not only important to have a great character that appeals to the audience feelings, but to have an actor that portray this person the right way. Suraj Sharma was brilliant as Pi. He can make happy scenes as equal as sad, desperate, hopelessness, exhaustion and anger ones. Very few movies allow an actor represent so many emotions.
But if Pi is a good character, tiger can only be describe as unique. The tiger as personality of it's own. Not many films can make an animal with so many human features and yet never stop being a wild animal. This tiger is computed animated but the audience will barely notice, because the way it walks, eats, its factions, the eyes. It doesn't matter if it is computer animation, Richard Parker is alive and is his own character just as important as Pi is.
This is one of the best films of the year, and on-par with the depth and cinematography in Samsara, making this year one of the most beautiful.
2) Which version of the story is more appealing ?
I personally feel that reading a book is much then based on it. While you read the book you are free to imagine. The contents l but when you want watch the movie you are imposed with the director's thinking.
All books are better their movies. I mean, it a book you read the thoughts, the feelings. You capture the moment, because it's like someone telling you their story. In a movie, you are on the outside looking in. In a book. You are a part of the story.
Both the book and the movie can be considered timeless masterpieces. While the book taps into our imagination, the movie thrills our audio-visual senses. The book explores many emotions, while the movie stays more focused on Pi’s journey. Nonetheless, I cannot recommend both enough.
3) What is the significance of ' Tiger' ?
The adventure story- life of Pi revolves around a 17 year old Indian boy who had an inconceivable journey with a tiger on the Pacific Ocean. When Pi and his family moved to Canada, the ship sank by the catastrophe. Pi's family died by this tragedy, but Pi survived on a small boat. Although there are several animals on the boat, only Pi and tiger survived at the end of the adventure which happened on the Pacific Ocean. Furthermore tiger left Pi away and he want to the forest without any reaction.
In Life of Pi animals play a significant role in the story by displaying Pi's changing personality the friendship between Pi and tiger and the belief of humans and animals are equal. Animal play a significant role in the story by displaying Pi's changing personality.
Tigers are predator and stronger than Pi. Animals imagery can change the story to male it more attractive and mysterious. In this adventure Pi lost everything. At the beginning of the novel Pi was surrounded by animals instead of humans. At the end Pi was alone on and Island. Tiger is not only the animal but also Pi's best friend or even the Pi's shadow. However tiger used to lived in the forest and Pi needs go back to the real world.
4) What is the significance of 'Island' ?
The film Life of Pi directed by Ang Lee, is a fable for our climate change times. Much of the plot involves the struggles of a teenage boy named Pi, trying to survive a shipwreck in which his family dies Pi becomes stranded in the Pacific Ocean on a life boat with a tiger.
After many trials Pi and tiger reach a strange Island made of plants that Pi eats. It has a forest, fresh water pools, and a large population of meerkats that sustain tiger. At night, however the meerkats flee to the trees and tiger to the life boat.
Pi watches from a branch as the island's freshwater turns acidic digesting fish that have died in the pools the seas that the water around the island is filled with fluorescent jellyfish. Pi finds a human tooth inside a flower. He decides the island is carnivorous the island is carnivorous and decides to leave with the tiger in their boat. The acidic island of the Life of Pi film contains subtle, artistic warning for humanity.
5) What is the difference between Spirituality and Religion and what is the significance of doubt in it ?
Spirituality and religion are not the same. There is a big difference between the two. So, let's find out what is the difference between spirituality and religion.
We believe that religion means going to see, listening to lectures and doing action. However, just think about this that after doing all this, if even a small fault of ours can change our whole life, then can it be called religion?
In today's world, people are considered to be religious only by their external conduct ex, those who go to temple, worship and perform austerities, perform kriya kanda, fast and give alms are all considered religious, others are not. Not considered. However, it all depends on one's internal energy, as it plays an important part, ex, what is the inner focus, what kind of anger, honor, love and greed is filled, whether there is any sense of cheating and robbing people. There is a price, and so many things must be verified. That is because it alone can determine one's actual spiritual progress.
• Spirituality opens the mind.
• Religion binds you.
• Religion threatens and frightens,
• Spirituality is governed by ability to reason out actions, thinking and gives inner peace.
• Religion speaks of sins and guilt and how to refrain from that.
• Religion is human. It is an organization with rules made by men.
• Spirituality is divine, without any intervention of human rules.
• Religion talks of life after death, sin for wrong deeds and punishments for misdeeds as interpreted by religious scriptures.
• Spirituality is to find true independence, freedom, peace, solace, in ourselves during this life itself.
• Religion fills us with the notion of glory, luxury in paradise, and there is a hell as well.
• Spirituality makes us live in the glory of ourself, being a human being and in its environment. It says that the mind itself can make a living that can be hell or heaven, mind is everything.
• Religion can be cause of divisions as there can be many faiths all antithetical to each other. So it can be Islam, it can be Christianity or..
• Spirituality never divides, it is the most unifying force. There cannot be Islamic spirituality, or Christian spirituality.
We are not human beings, who go through a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings, who go through a human experience.
Religion is a path; it is a method, a way to live a life. Spirituality is actually based on realisation; Spirituality is realisation to seek a purpose of life, the value of existence. Religion allows you to exist, spirituality allows you to live, and most people merely exist.
Thank you...
Thinking Activity : Frankenstein
10 September, 2022
Hello friends, Here I am going to write a blog on movie review of Frankenstein. Which is assigned by Yesha ma'am.
Frankenstein
Task 1 :
∆ Movie Review :
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a never miss. It’s a good movie.Frankenstein is a science-fiction novel written by Mary Shelley. It was first published in 1818 and the first edition was anonymous because that was the only way Shelley could publish her book, definitely it was a difficult time for female writers... Fornutaley, the second edition was published with the name of the author and that’s how we know who wrote it.
This movie is about Victor Frankenstein, a scientist and doctor who has a revolutionary idea: to create a new human from corpse parts and giving him life thanks to science. We all have an idea of what this story is about: a green, grotesque, lumbering, giant monster, but this novel has so much more than that. It is a story about the meaning of life, death, love, friendship and revenge. It shows us different sides of the story: from the creator who feds-up his creation, and the perspective of the creation, who is desperate to be loved and understood. In this way, we get to know both main characters, their personalities and ambitions. Personally, I really enjoyed watching it, it was a great experience not only for watching a movie, but also to reflect on how we all need someone we can trust in. Besides, the style of the author makes a beautiful narration of the actions, feelings and thoughts of the characters. This is a movie you shouldn’t miss, I definitely recommend it.
At the end of the movie, Victor dies on Robert Walton’s ship in the Arctic Circle. The boat captain finds his body and the monster who mourns Victor’s death in the room. The Creature disappears from the boat to kill himself. Victor and the monster die in the end. But the nature of their deaths is different.
Frankenstein is a young and ambitious scientist who uses the pieces of a dead body to put together and apply electrical force to create a living animal in the shape of a human, slightly larger than an ordinary human. A creature with a scary face that has sewing marks all over its body. This creature is so horrible that everyone, even its creator, escapes from his evils. A monster whose creator can not control it and is subdued by it.
Task 2 :
# Questions and Answers :
∆ Villain in Frankenstein :
→ In the movie, the villain is Victor Frankenstein with no doubt. He tried to play God by creating a creature and then left it on its own. Being ambitious is commendable, but being over ambitious is reprehensible. Frankenstein was extreme with regard to his passion and ambition. He did not think about the repercussions of his actions. He could be the prototype of the mad scientist, who is consumed in his ambitions and inventions that he ignores the consequences it has on his surrounding.
∆ Who decides what beauty is? Is it for real or Superficial? (Outer beauty v/s inner beauty)
→ Inner beauty refers to the personality of a person including his/her mind and character. Whereas outer beauty simply refers to the looks of a person. It can easily be faked and changed through makeup, dressing, surgery etc.
"A beautiful face cannot hide an ugly heart for long."
I believe that most people value the inside beauty more. Although I must say that I feel that men want both in a woman. I’m not saying that women don’t mind ugly people, just that women are more flexible when it comes to outside beauty.
However, when you first meet a person, you can’t really see the inside; so you look for the outside because that is what is apparent. You look for outside beauty, and hope that the inside is just as beautiful.
Shelley suggests that appearances can indicate someone's inner self, but only because society inevitably reacts to beautiful people in a way that makes them able to be good—and to ugly people in a way that makes them turn out evil. Through her characters, Shelley emphasizes the unfortunate importance of beauty in first impressions, the superiority of good-looking individuals, and reliance on outer beauty for pleasure. It’s although inner beauty lacks importance and outer beauty is all that is significant to humanity. We are introduced to several good-looking characters, such as Elizabeth and Justine, and a much less appealing one, the creature, who serve as clear examples of the lack of regard for one’s inner-self and the dejected consequences of not being attractive.
∆ Why Victor was not able to accept his dream experiment and its results?
→ Victor Frankenstein is the protagonist of Frankenstein. His goal is to achieve something great and morally good, he creates the Monster.
Victor wanted to experiment on dead men and make them alive. He wanted to take the place of God. He continues his experiments and finally succeeds in it but he creates a monster, seeing him Victor rejects him. The monster is very sad to seeing that, the monster is very sad because the person who created him rejects him. Besides, the society also rejects the monster. So the monster gets very sad. Due to his bad appearance, society and people were rejecting him. Victor regrets his experiment and is unable to accept his dream experiment and it's results.
∆ What made Creature a Monster?
→ The monster created by Victor Frankenstein is rejected by human society because of his appearance. Mary Shelley explores the feelings of creature totally ignored and abused by the society. The novel became a reflection of the inner state of Mary Shelly. It reflects sufferings and looses of the author.
The monster feels loneliness and alienation. It seeks for understanding and love but can not find a living creature which would share its feelings.Physical appearance becomes the main barrier for the creature. It does not allow it to build normal relations in the society. People do not make any attempts to find out about the inner world of the Monster after they saw how it looks. The monster was created by Victor only physically. In reality it was crated by the society. Indifferent attitude and disgust finally resulted in the birth of real monster which threatens its creator and society.
Victor's anger towards the monster seems to be a vent of his own anger towards himself as he realises the time he has wasted, the relationships he has missed out on and his family's tragedies. He blames the creature for his obsession with success. While Victor feels unmitigated hatred for his creation, the monster shows that he is not a purely evil being.
∆ Why Society has rejected Victor’s idea of experiment and then the result of his experiment?
→ Society rejected Victor's experiment because Victor had created a monster that was too terrifying. He was rejected by society. This was the same demon that killed Victor's relatives one by one. So now Victor tries to save his wife at any cost but in the end the monster kills his wife too and at the end of the movie Victor is left alone and realizes what the monster must have experienced from society and people in isolation.

History Puritan Age and Restoration Age
31 August, 2022
Hello friends, Here I am going to write a blog on Puritan Age and Restoration Age. Which is assigned by Dilip Barad sir.
∆ General characteristics of the age :
Characteristics of Puritan Age :
The period between 1625 and 1675 is known as the “Puritan Age, because during the period, Puritan standards prevailed in England, and also because the greatest literary figure John Milton was a Puritan. The Puritans struggled for righteousness and liberty.
Characteristics of Puritan Age :
→ Puritan Literature was not meant to be entertaining. It was meant to provide the reader with lessons on religious themes and on how to live a more virtuous and pious life by God's word. The main theme was predestination, which meant that everyone is born a sinner and that a select few had been chosen by the will of God to enter heaven. Because it is unknown whether a person has been selected by God or not, everyone should live virtuously and morally.
→ The main goal of Puritan Literature was to teach and provide frameworks on how to live a life that follows the teachings of God and the Bible. Puritans did not view literature as a form of entertainment; therefore, they shunned elaborate and complex forms of writing. Rather, they wrote simply and directly. This allowed the author to reach their point faster and more clearly. It also allowed the author to write for a wider audience, as it appealed to multiple levels of education in society.
→ The Bible was the main framework by which Puritans lived. Therefore, Biblical allusions commonly appear in Puritan Literature.Biblical allusions most often come in the form of the author referencing a biblical character or event, indirectly comparing that biblical character or event to a character or event in the work of literature. Puritan authors would also use allusions to draw comparisons between a contemporary struggle to a struggle found in the Bible, with the hopes it would help the reader find clarity or a solution to the problem.
→ Puritanism and Puritan Literature used fear often. By instilling a reader with a fear of God's power, they are more likely to make changes in their lives to live in accordance with the word of God and the Bible. Puritan authors would often describe the eternal damnation waiting for a sinner if they lived a life that went against the word of God and the Bible. Emotional tactics such as fear had great influence and impact, especially when it concerned the afterlife.
→ A conception of each individual life as a journey to salvation. Puritans saw direct connections between Biblical events and their own lives.
→Puritans used writing to explore their inner and outer lives for signs of the workings of God.
→Diaries and histories were the most common forms of expression in Puritan society, because they directly expressed the workings of God.
→Puritans favored a plain style, similar to that ofthe Geneva Bible. They stressed clarity of expression and avoided complicated figures of speech.
The Restoration Age :
The period from 1660 to 1700 is mentioned as the Restoration Age or the Age of Dryden because the monarchy was restored in England.
Characteristics of Restoration Age :
∆ Rise of Neo-Classicism :
The Restoration marks a complete break with the past and the Elizabethan Romanticism was almost over. With the end of the past, literature took a new spirit and outlook and a different attitude in the subject and style. Lacking of the genius in Elizabethans, the authors of the time turned to the great classical writers, particularly Latin writers, for guidance and inspiration. This habit was hardened during the Age which we called Neo – Classicism.
∆ Imitation of The Ancients :
The authors of the period were not endowed with exceptional talents. So, they turned to the ancient writers for guidance and inspiration. They directed their attention to the slavish imitation of rules and ignore the importance of the subject – matter. This habit was noticeable in the Age of Dryden. And it was strengthened in the Age of Pope.
∆ Realism :
Restoration literature is realistic. It was concerned with the life and with the fashion and manners. Later, this tendency of realism becomes more wholesome.
∆ Social life :
The Restoration writers weren't interested in silly things like nature, or grand philosophical questions. They were interested in all the drama that went on in the society in which they lived. Social behavior and social manners, then, are big themes in Restoration literature.
∆ Satire :
The Restoration writers developed satire as a genre and a style of writing. These authors loved picking on people—literary rivals, religious figures, even entire social classes—and showing just how ridiculous they all were. Restoration writers mastered the art of poking fun at people.
∆ New Literary Forms :
The writers of the age went against the Elizabethan romantic ideals and tried to give realistic picture of the corrupt court and society. They exposed vices rather than virtues.

The Act: Dryden on Dramatic Poesie
∆ Do you any difference between Aristotle's definition of Tragedy and Dryden's definition of Play?
Play and Tragedy are literary and theatrical genres that date back to ancient times but are still commonly used in modern forms of entertainment.
Dryden's definition of Play :
The original definition of Play was provided by Dryden,Just and lively image of human nature, representing its passions and humours, and the changes of fortune to which it is subject, for the delight and instruction of mankind.According to the definition, drama is an ‘image’ of ‘human nature’, and the image is ‘just’ and ‘lively’. By using the word ‘just’ Dryden seems to imply that literature imitates human actions.
The first thing is that a play is an image of human nature. It is not a servile copy, it resembles and at the same time differs from human nature. A play is an image of human nature mainly because it represents it's passions and humours, so many human emotions, passions with which a heart throbs and all the intricate subtle psychic processes are to be portrayed.
Here Dryden has explained that emotions or character is expressed through action. The phrase 'change of fortune' refers the plot. Now Aristotle explains drama as an imitation of on action. In his theory, human passions or character is in the background.
On the other hand, Dryden gives importance to the passions and humours though they are revealed through action.
Obviously Dryden's concept at all universality is based on more on psychological realism than the Aristotelian probability.
The original definition of tragedy was provided by Aristotle, who defined tragedy as a form of drama in which the protagonist has a tragic flaw, such as excessive pride. This flaw will cause him to take an action that triggers an unfortunate series of events that will ultimately lead to his own downfall. Typically these protagonists were men of power and stature; the greater the distance the protagonist fell, the greater the tragedy.
According to Aristotle, tragedy has six main elements: plot, character, diction, thought, spectacle, and song, of which the first two are primary.
Tragedy is an imitation, not of men, but of action and life, of happiness and misery. And life consists of action, and its end is a mode of activity, not a quality. The purpose of action in the tragedy, therefore, is not the representation of character: character comes in as contributing to the action. Hence the incidents and the plot are the end of the tragedy; and the end is the chief thing of all.
The aim of a tragedy is to arouse pity and fear through an alteration in the status of the central character, he must be a figure with whom the audience can identify and whose fate can trigger these emotions. Aristotle says that "pity is aroused by unmerited misfortune, fear by the misfortune of a man like ourselves."
In the end, In some way they both are different and in some way they both are similar with each other.
∆ What would be your preference so far as a poetic or prosaic dialogues are concerned in the play?
I would like to go with prosaic dialogues in the play. Because just like in movies, good fiction needs dialogue to engage readers and infuse its story with drama. There's more to the purpose of dialogue, though, than just giving the main players words to say. Through characterization and plot development, dialogue is ultimately a source of critical information in helping readers understand the story.
The way a character speaks can provide a lot of information. Because the characters each have distinctive voices, realistic, well-written dialogue will introduce readers to them in ways that show their most important attributes.
Dialogue benefits narratives in several ways. It theatricality enhances and entertains. It also adds different voices to the story and keeps it fresh. A scene of dialogue can move the plot of a story forward.
Effective dialogue usually includes action, body language, subtext, and the thoughts, opinions, and emotions of the viewpoint character. It’s a powerful, dynamic device that, done right, will draw readers deep into your story.
Example :
Here are examples of dialogues between some characters from the play Macbeth.
